Jerome Thornbury

Jerry grew up in Kentucky and has therefore always loved the game of basketball. When he moved to Tampa in high school, he played for Sickles. There, he developed a lifelong bond with the talented young varsity coach and ex-Florida basketball star, Reynaldo Garcia. Jerry kept in touch with Coach Garcia throughout college at the University of Florida (where, at 5'10," despite his talent, Jerry was NOT able to continue his basketball career). In 2011, Jerry found himself living once again in Tampa. Having kept in touch with Coach Garcia over the years, Jerry decided to start going to Sickles to watch the old team play. In just a decade, Coach Garcia had turned the 10 year old high school into a regional threat, and Jerry found himself attending as many Sickles games as he could, often sharing his observations with "Coach" afterwards on the phone. Recognizing Jerry's eye for strategy and talent, Coach Garcia invited Jerry to start helping out as a volunteer assistant coach. The rest is history, as we all know that the Sickles High School Gryphons won the state championship in 2017, ending a 35-year Hillsborough County public school basketball title drought, thanks in no small part to their visionary new offensive coordinator and beloved volunteer assistant coach, Jerry. Now at Berkeley Prep, Jerry is excited to work with a new group of future state champs. He looks forward to some day down the road when one of his own former standout players shows up in his gym eager to assist.
