I am an Exceptional Student Education Teacher in Hillsborough County. This means I work with students with Autism Intellectual Disability Down Syndrome and any other disabilities that require a student to need significantly more support than could be provided in a regular class. Each year my number of student varries and I can have anywhere from 3 to 15 kids with one full time aide in the classroom. I became a teacher because I love working with children and watching them learn; I became an ESE teacher because I love helping these students become independent from a young age in order to create long term independence and self sufficiency. Our students require a lot of support and a lot of different materials because their functional ability can range anywhere from pre-school skills to near grade-level skills. We do activities such as weekly cooking lessons running a school-wide coffee cart for staff and making academic activities meaningful accessible and fun. Winning this award would mean so much to me but it would mean more for my kids who would have so many more resources available to them.
