My sister’s students are not your average kids; they are the ones society has discarded like yesterday’s garbage. Yet she goes into work everyday with a single mission on her mind; educating these kids to become productive adults. She not only provides food and/or school supplies purchased out of her own pocket; she provides fuel for their souls and minds. She does not let them give up on themselves even though others have. Sure she teaches them the basics such as math and English but she also provides them with a power many have never known; confidence! I have seen previous students hug her because they got into college. While high school is a pivotal time in a students life, my sister gives these at risk kids a platform to make it to high school. She is teaching them the skills to stay the course, leading to the ultimate victory! Knowledge and confidence that will allow them to break the mold to support themselves. Many say teachers are special but none can truly understand the emotional roller-coaster of heartache, anguish, sadness, joy and elation associated with such a stellar teacher as my sister. I used to think of her as my pesky little sister. However, after seeing the difference she has made in the lives of her students, I see her as an extraordinary teacher. Now don’t get me wrong she will always be my bratty little sister but I also see her as an amazing teacher who freely gives more of herself than anyone could possibly imagine to ensure no child is left behind.
